2017 wasn’t the best of times, was it? Brexit fall-out, Trump, return of the Nazis and that advent calendar that didn’t reveal if Kylie Jenner was pregnant or not.
So how can you make sure you enter 2018 and make it your year, just like our Queen – the GC – made 2017 her year?
In the closing months of 2017, we saw Gemma find her way back to one of her biggest loves, Arg. Whilst I’m not suggesting you should take back that prick that fat-shamed you, cheated on you and took the piss out of you to his mates – you can take your relationship by the horns and sort them out.
We’ve all been in relationships where we think, ‘Just give it time.’ Or, ‘If X doesn’t change by X then we’ll break up.’ But not in 2018. To ensure the biggest glow-up you’ve ever had takes place, you must ensure your relationships are healthy.
So make the break if you’re not happy – YOU CAN DO IT. Or on the flip-side, ask that person out (or back out) if you think it’ll be good for you.
Our Queen is known for telling people about themselves. For not taking any crap. For ditching friendships and cutting out people that bring her down – so why not take this on board too?
I wrote about toxic friendships earlier in the year and I will be continuing to cleanse my life, in 2018, of anyone that doesn’t support me, cheer for me or who is never there for me.
To really take 2018 by the balls, you can’t have people around you that drain you and fill your brain space with negativity.
So ignore the text, cancel the begrudged meet up and fill your social calendars with people who are really on your team.
GC is not one to have gotten to where she is without criticism. Over the years she’s faced a barrage of abuse from internet trolls, the media and people close to her. They’ve body-shamed her, made fun of her and generally doubted her. But what happened during her glow-up in 2017? They became her biggest fans.
I’ve been lucky to escape most negativity as my readership (you guys who are basically my buddies) have always been kind to me, but should I face any nastiness, either online or in real-life, I’ll be taking a leaf out of Gemma’s book.
So in 2018, stay in your lane, quietly grind, prove everyone wrong, watch those viewers, readers and commenters become fans and prove to yourself, above anyone else, that you can do anything you put your mind to.
The moment our icon fell through that stage, on TV this year, was probably one of her biggest moments. She could’ve been so embarrassed that she fled from the limelight and let all of the jokes and memes get her down. But she didn’t. She took it in good humour and relished all of the extra attention it brought her.
Making mistakes and moving on from them is what truly ensures growth. Because if you never make any mistakes, you’ll never learn how good doing something really really well feels like.
So this year, dust yourself off. Laugh off the embarrassment. Rise above and come back fighting.
Last year, Gemma admitted she had been trying to get more healthy (in her words) by exercising more and trying to lose weight. For her, that’s what she deemed getting healthy. But really, health isn’t about pushing yourself to be slimmer – it’s about listening to your own body and what it needs.
In 2017, I made my first steps in trying to get mind-healthy by reaching out and getting help for my mental-health problems. I also changed my diet (which I know is a privilege) so that I felt better inside my body too. But there are a ton of different ways to get healthy, all that are suitable for some and not for others.
So make sure, this year is the year you tune into your body, you listen to what it tells you it needs and you give it to it. Because your glow-up needs a strong and healthy you!
To top off GC’s 2017 glow-up, she began new ventures into TV and signed with BooHoo to bring out a fashion line. Things she never would’ve thought were possible the previous year.
2018 is the year to assess where you are career-wise and make changes as immediately as possible for your own sake and sanity. If you’re happy in your current role, work your arse off at it so that you can achieve everything you desire. If you’re unhappy, look at other careers that interest you and start fiddling with that CV.
Last year saw Ms Gemma Collins, Our Queen and Idol’s return to her first love, TOWIE. After a break away to pursue other options, she decided a return was what made her happy.
So why not do more of that in 2018? Maybe there’s a hobby you’ve given up due to time or other restraints. Or an old flame you haven’t quite gotten over. Whatever it is, light those old flames and seek passions in your life that will make your heart happy.
If there’s one thing to be said for Gemma it’s that she really doesn’t give a fuck. And that girl knows how to put herself first.
So ensure your 2018 Glow-Up by following my tips above but remember, above all else, 2018 is YOUR YEAR. If you want to boss it, you can. If you want to hibernate, you can. If you find the pressure of making it ‘your year’ INCREDIBLY INTENSE AND PRESSURISING, then don’t listen to my post, go at your own pace, do things you want to do that make you happy and remember to do you.
